On the morning of Thursday, Aug. 18, our CMN Ace All-Star, Kasey Harvey, kicked off the Ace 2016 Fall Convention and Exhibits General Session in Chicago. Kasey, along with President and CEO John Venhuizen and EVP John Surane, spoke briefly before introducing the keynote speaker, General Stanley McChrystal.

Following a video congratulating Ace retailers on their 10th consecutive J.D. Power award for customer satisfaction, Kasey walked across the stage carrying Ace’s most recent trophy.

Kasey highlighted the top retailer fundraising markets so far this year and helped recognize this year’s CMN All-Star Retailer, Matt Mazzone from Mazzone Ace Hardware in Brooklyn. Matt received a $25,000 donation to his CMN hospital, Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New York, from Duracell and P&G.

“Due to the care I have received at Rady Children’s Hospital, I have been in remission for 10 months,” said Kasey. She thanked Ace retailers and closed with, “I am so proud to be your Ace All-Star and feel both honored and blessed to be part of the Ace family.”

John Surane took the stage and focused on two main topics. The first was 20/20 Vision and the persistence progress that is necessary to keep us on track in our seven-year growth strategy. He then discussed how we are accelerating our plans to Invest in the Brand to make us stronger in the future.

John also quoted Warren Buffet by saying, “In business, I look for economic castles protected by unbreachable moats.” He then proceeded to illustrate how our brand, products, service and convenience are just a few of the ways retailers can deepen and widen the moat surrounding their business.

John Venhuizen introduced the keynote speaker, General Stanley McChrystal, whom he called “a true American hero,” to the stage. General McChrystal is the former commander of U.S. and international forces in Afghanistan and author of bestsellers “Team of Teams” and “My Share of the Task.” General Stan McChrystal is widely praised for creating a revolution in warfare that combined intelligence and operations, turning the tide in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

General McChrystal shared some of his field-tested leadership lessons used to help leaders and organizations succeed in challenging and dynamic environments. It was a unique opportunity to hear directly from a one-of-a-kind commander and visionary with a remarkable record of achievement.
